In March 2003 David Stall of Texas purchased
the
Chrysler Air Raid Siren
pictured above.
Like his wife and
others, you might wonder why!
Seems that David,
the city manager of a rural Texas town, was looking for a used siren to
add to the city's warning system. While searching for the right
equipment he ran across this retired Chrysler Siren for sale in
Pennsylvania. It was unlike anything he had ever seen before.
And that was quite a surprise because David has been actively involved
in civil defense for a quarter century. So long, in fact, that he
received Cold War era training from the Defense Department in an
underground bunker when radioactive fallout was still a very real
concern.
His interest was
piqued!
See David is a
history buff, and to him this looked like solid cast iron Cold War
history in the Pennsylvania snow. And a technical marvel as well.
The fifty year old Chrysler Air Raid Siren was then, and is still, the loudest warning device
ever sold. [

David's also a creative international museum promoter
who worked with the Russian Air Force to present the largest collection
of Soviet Space artifacts ever exhibited outside Russia. To David
the
Chrysler Siren presented a very unique combination of history and
mechanical genius that he believes deserves a place in the public spotlight.
This proud
Chrysler Air Raid Siren was soon to become the next big project.
With his interest
piqued, the research began. The more he learned, the more he was
hooked. Within a couple weeks he found himself the owner of this
Chrysler Air Raid Siren. A siren that had once been installed
atop the three-story Carrick High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
during the 1950's. [

Upon
purchasing the Chrysler Siren David dubbed it the
VictorySiren™.
No stranger to
marketing, David knew that a project like this would need a name. A
memorable name that could be easily identified with the siren. A
name that could be trademarked without infringing on existing
trademarks. His research led him to back to the siren's roots and
a common WW-II theme, Victory. And the name was born,
VictorySiren™.
It
was only the beginning.
Purchasing the siren
is only the first step of an awfully long journey. David intends to
restore the
VictorySiren™
to
look like it did on the day it was
delivered to Pittsburgh. That means moving the three-ton siren
from Pennsylvania to Texas where he can personally oversee the
restoration. Accomplishing a faithful restoration.
Designing and constructing a custom trailer that can be used to easily
transport and display the restored siren. And, producing a
first-rate exhibit and interpretive materials.
Photographs on VictorySiren.com™
show the challenge.
Despite its rough
appearance today, the Pittsburgh siren is largely intact. Those
who have undertaken the restoration of an automobile starting in similar
condition can testify to the amazing transformation that can be
accomplished.

David is confident
that the restored VictorySiren ™
will tour the country.
Today the
VictorySiren™,
is
still in Pennsylvania, but within the next couple months it will be
transported to a warmer climate
– Texas! Once it
arrives in Texas a complete restoration is planned, from the frame up.
Great attention will be paid to detail and ensuring that the restoration
is a faithful representation of what the siren would have looked like
some fifty years ago.
The restored siren will
then be taken on tour across the United States for public display. [
Tour Information ]
The
VictorySiren™
will be
accompanied by an exhibit that includes vintage
Chrysler Siren posters, photographs, fascinating facts and historical
information. It will also arrive with a high-quality stereo
compact disk recording and video recording of the siren in action, from
the engine starting to a full-blast signal. [
Hear the
Siren Running ]
The public will be able to
follow the
VictorySiren™
through restoration and tour.
On March 8, 2003, David
Stall created the website,
VictorySiren.com™, expressly
for the purpose of promoting
the
VictorySiren™
and
sharing information about
the most interesting sirens ever produced. Photographs and
descriptions of the
VictorySiren™
restoration will be place online throughout the process so that the
public can follow along.
