All the wear-and-tear that's seen in the current condition photographs occurred while on the high school roof.  Understand that this equipment, in Pittsburgh as elsewhere, was taken out of service in the 1970's.  These sirens would have been sold for scrap and/or discarded long ago if they didn't weigh 3-tons.  Since most were high atop a tower or roof the cost of removal was more than their surplus value and so they sat and were left to languish in place.
