Scheel House

This is a photo of the Scheel family farmhouse that was built in an area of Fayette County known at the Santa Ana bottoms, near the Fayette-Colorado County line.  The original site of this house became a gravel pit.  The last residents were John F. "Johnnie" Scheel (d.1974) and Lydia Fritsch Scheel (d.1977) who married in 1927.  We believe that Johnnie's parents, Peter Scheel and Lizzie Koehl Scheel lived in the house before them and may have built the house before 1900.   (circa 1900)

In about 1976 the house was moved three miles to Ellinger.  Here's the same farmhouse today where it has been waiting in Ellinger for the last 25-years.  The side porch has been enclosed although the interior of the porch was never finished (see photo below).  The original doors and windows seen in the photo above are still there inside the porch enclosure.   (08.09.01)

The last owner moved the house and started putting vinyl siding on it, but only got halfway done.  Linda bought the house today and will have it moved to Rain Creek Farm sometime around January of 2002.  We have visited the original home site (29° 27' 44"N - 96° 41' 19" W)    (08.09.01)

Linda goes to see the inside with the current owner, Emil Koehl.  We wonder if Emil and Lizzie Koehl Scheel are related?  (08.09.01)

Linda checks it all out.  This farmhouse will become our guesthouse in the distant future.  In about five months it will be moved onto the empty lot at Rain Creek Farm where it will wait for us to have the time and money to restore it.  In the meantime it will likely become the shop space for Victorian Fence & Millworks.   (08.09.01)

This is the front porch with the unfinished enclosure. The window and siding is original.  Our plan is to remove the enclosure and restore the original porch.   (08.09.01)

From this doorway you can see through three rooms.  There's also stairs and a room upstairs.   (08.09.01)
