Officials with Macquarie Group Ltd., who had
in the past talked to city officials about
leasing Austin-Bergstrom International Airport,
made similar rounds in the past month "to see
whether the climate had changed" for such a
deal, Austin City Council Member Betty Dunkerley
said this week.
It hasn't, she said.
"I just told them that there'd have to be a
lot of education done in the community for this
to be viable," Dunkerley said.
Repeating what other council members have
said, Dunkerley said the public should have the
right to vote on such a deal.
The city clears about $10 million a year at
the airport, but that surplus by law can be
spent only on the airport grounds. A one-time
payment from a company could give the city money
for other purposes.
