After numerous well-attended meetings on the
Trans Texas Corridor, Walker County's leaders
will officially oppose the superhighway project.
A proclamation was unanimously approved by
county commissioners at Monday night's meeting,
and will be sent to the state shortly.
County Judge Danny Pierce said Tuesday there
is no gray area when it comes to the topic of
TTC in Walker County, and that in its present
design, the multi-billion dollar project is not
wanted by the vast majority of residents.
Two town hall meetings in January and a
public hearing last week featured overwhelming
opposition from the hundreds in attendance.
Among the reasons cited, the Walker County
proclamation says the road would split farms and
ranches, and take land that would negatively
impact the county's tax base.
Grimes County residents and leaders have put
up similar opposition to the project. The
current corridor study area would bring TTC
through Walker and Grimes Counties, though a
second -- a possibly third -- study will likely
be conducted. A "no-build" option is also on the
table.
A TTC public hearing in Navasota is scheduled
for February 28.
Bryan will host a hearing March 3.
