A second corridor hearing to be added in Waller County

Turnout at the first was so high some didn't get in

Feb. 3, 2008

By RAD SALLEE, Houston Chronicle

Responding to requests by local officials and residents, the Texas Department of Transportation said it will schedule an additional public hearing in Waller County on the proposed I-69/Trans-Texas Corridor.

A Jan. 22 town hall meeting on the toll project drew such a crowd in Hempstead that some people turned away for lack of nearby parking, facing a long walk to the hall in the rain.

TxDOT spokesman Chris Lippincott said state Sen. Glenn Hegar and state Rep. John Zerwas, both R-Katy, asked for another meeting to give everyone a voice.

Lippincott said that, because of a tight schedule for the community input process, TxDOT will not hold more town hall meetings, but will add a formal public hearing to the two already scheduled in Waller County.

The date and site will be announced this week, he said.

The other two meetings, both at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 27, will be at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 22892 Mack Washington in Hempstead, and Waller High School, 20950 Fields Store Road, in Waller.

At town hall meetings, state transportation officials respond to questions and comments from the audience, but the exchanges are for information only.

At public hearings, residents' comments are recorded for consideration by state and federal authorities, and hearing officers are not allowed to respond.
