Toll Road Campaign Called Illegal
The
debate about Texas Toll Roads just keeps getting deeper and
deeper.
A
Texas Senator has now stated the Texas Department of
Transportation may have gone over the legal line with it's
campaigns for toll roads and the Trans-Texas Corridor. The
Express News quotes Senator John Corona as saying, "There is a
possibility they may well have crossed a legal threshold because
of the restrictions that exist in lobbying by state agencies."
The
group Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom (TURF) believes
TxDOT violated state law with their lobbying efforts and filed a
lawsuit against the state agency. TURF claims TxDOT violated
Section 556.05 of the Texas Government Code.
§
556.005. Employment of Lobbyist
(a) A state agency may not
use appropriated money to employ, as a regular full-time or
part-time or contract employee, a person who is required by
Chapter 305 to register as a lobbyist. Except for an
institution of higher education as defined by Section
61.003, Education Code, a state agency may not use any money
under its control to employ or contract with an individual
who is required by Chapter 305 to register as a lobbyist.
