SAN ANTONIO
-- A group of local
lawmakers joined Northside
residents Tuesday to protest a
planned toll road project for
U.S. Highway 281.
"It's uncalled for and they are
arrogant because they are not
listening to the will of the
people," District 118 Rep. Joe
Farias said, speaking to a crowd
of anti-toll protestors.
Farias joined District 117 Rep.
David Liebowitz and District 73
Rep. Nathan Macias to speak out
against the Texas Department of
Transportation's decision to
toll the busy roadway.
Liebowitz said TXDOT is not
utilizing the gas tax people pay
at the pump although it's meant
solely for highway projects.
"(It's) what they need to do
before they come and tell us
they need to pick our pockets
again and charge us up to 50
cents a mile to drive on a
highway," he said.
The officials said the tax money
would have paid for construction
of three overpasses at the first
three lights on Highway 281 just
north of Loop 1604.
TXDOT plans on moving forward
with the project despite the
protests.
