NO tolling existing highways!
The
Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce
WOAI AM 1200 News Director
Jim Forsyth broke the story last week that
TxDOT had sent a letter to Congress in early '07,
noting that a change in federal law would allow Texas to
"buy back" interstate highways and subsequently levy
tolls to help raise money and pay for improvements. Such
a plan would require approval from both Bexar County
Commissioner's Court and a public vote. Swift
objections to such a plan were voiced by local
officials and business community leaders, including
County Judge Nelson Wolff and Chamber President and CEO
Joe Krier. They were echoed by a bipartisan
coalition of lawmakers in Austin and Washington, the
latter led by
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who plans to file a
bill banning states from converting existing highways
into toll roads. We'll keep you posted....
