Unions concerned about Toll Road
Munster -- Construction unions that supported
efforts to privatize the Indiana Toll Road now worry
that the road's operator will give jobs to nonunion
workers from other countries.
"We are very concerned," said Jim Strayer, business
manager for the Northwest Indiana Building and
Construction Trades Council. "We are not getting the
share of the work that we did before."
Construction unions supported Gov. Mitch Daniels'
plan for privatization, saying the $3.8 billion Toll
Road lease would spur road-building projects across
the state. Now union leaders fear the Toll Road will
one day become a union-free work zone.
