Congressmen Pushes to Halt
Governor's Toll Plan

Governor Ed Rendell’s plan to put
toll booths on Interstate 80 will
hit a major snag in Washington, if a
central Pennsylvania Republican
congressman gets his way.
It was just last week that
Governor Rendell signed state
legislation to have Pennsylvania try
to impose tolls on I-80 and spend
$750 million this year on
transportation projects and funds
for cash-strapped mass transit
systems.
Now the U.S. House of
Representatives has passed an
amendment that would prohibit using
federal money to place tolls on
Interstate 80. Fifth District
Republican Congressman John Peterson
got the anti-toll provision added to
a new Federal transportation bill.
He claims the tolls are just a
bailout for big city mass transit
systems with rural areas bearing the
financial burden.
Peterson called the decision
“terrible,” saying it would cause
irreversible economic damage. And he
says he’s concerned that the new
tolls are falling under what he
called a "bloated turnpike
commission.” The largest stretch of
Interstate 80 slices through the
heart of Peterson’s congressional
district.
The final funding legislation
must still be worked out in a
House-Senate conference committee
where it's uncertain whether the
language will remain.
