The next major freeway to be built in El
Paso may not be so free after all. The Texas Department of
Transportation is proposing to build more toll roads with higher
fees. The money would go to future infrastructure. Toll roads
would allow El Paso to rely less on tax payer money. The city
could take out loans and bonds because banks know they will get
their money back through the tolls. So instead of having to
string out a project over a number of years, the city could do
it all at one time. No tolls will be placed on any current
roads, but it could affect future projects.
