Two crashes within minutes of each other on
the Indiana Toll Road Wednesday morning brought
westbound traffic to a halt for about two hours.
About 6 a.m., the driver of a tractor-trailer
rig heading east near the Angola rest stop in
Steuben County hit wheel rims that were in the
road and lost control of the vehicle.
It rolled and collided with two parked
tractor-trailer rigs, blocking the westbound
lanes, Fremont Fire Chief Eric Hufnagle said.
The drivers of the parked rigs – one of which
was hauling flour – were sleeping, he said.
A few minutes before the crash, Steuben
dispatchers had transferred a call to the
Indiana State Police about debris in the road
near the Angola plaza, Hufnagle said.
One driver needed help getting out of his rig
and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
As rescue workers were heading to the crash,
the driver of a crane also traveling east hit
the same debris and rolled at least twice,
according to witnesses. The crane landed with
the driver’s side door in the grassy median, and
crews had to dig away dirt and cut open the roof
to free the driver.
He was taken to Cameron Memorial Hospital in
Angola with a small cut on his forehead,
Hufnagle said.
