Not-so neighborly: Critics of
the Indiana Toll Road lease worried that the
agreement would be plagued by disputes over the
road’s operation. One of those surfaced this
month between ITR Concessions, the Toll Road and
the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.
It seems that the 50 percent discounts
offered to Indiana drivers who use I-Pass
transponders on the Illinois Tollway (at a cost
of $9 million to Illinois) won’t be available to
Illinois drivers when ITR rolls out its new
I-Zoom transponder system in June. The private
toll road operator will extend its 40 percent
discount only to Indiana drivers. That news
prompted Illinois officials to issue a news
release calling on ITR to be a good neighbor and
make the discounts reciprocal. ITR claims that
conditions demanded by the Indiana General
Assembly preclude it from extending the
discount.
Here’s a tip, ITR: The legislature is
currently in session. Gov. Mitch Daniels and the
lawmakers who were so eager to rush into a
75-year lease a year ago should have no problem
fixing any language that might have
inadvertently caused this problem.
