SALEM
- State officials have scrapped plans to study the potential for
a private toll road to handle growth in Clackamas County.
The
Sunrise Corridor project would cost nearly $1 billion and would
not attract enough toll-paying traffic to make financial sense,
according to a report to the Oregon Transportation Commission
from the Macquarie Infrastructure Group,
an Australian company.
A
separate report said it looks more feasible to add lanes to
Interstate 205, but that works best if tolls are charged on the
entire freeway - not just the new lanes.
Members of the commission seemed taken aback by the reports.
``It's time to pull back and think carefully,'' said Chairman
Stuart Foster.
