David spots another turtle. This is a Three-toed Eastern Box
Turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis). (06.15.04)

This 6-inch female turtle enjoys eating slugs, earthworms,
wild strawberries and poisonous mushrooms. (06.15.04)

In this picture you can see the hinge in her lower shell
(straight line up and down is the movable plastron hinge). She can pull her head
and legs in and close the lower shell tight against the upper shell (hence the
name 'box turtle"). You can also see three toes on the hind feet that identify
this subspecies of Eastern Box Turtle. (06.15.04)
