OPERATOR INSTRUCTIONS

It is the responsibility of the Operator assigned to the Chrysler Air-Raid Siren to make sure that it is in perfect condition to operate at full efficiency at a moments notice. In order to insure instant operation in temperatures ranging as low as twenty-five (25) degrees below zero F. it is advisable to maintain the Engine water and Battery temperatures higher than the surrounding air temperature.

To accomplish this, the Engine is equipped with Two (2) Four Hundred (400) watt Engine water heaters, A Two Hundred Fifty (250) watt Battery heater that is thermostatically controlled to shut off when Battery temperature is above sixty (60) degrees F. and a Battery trickle charger to maintain Battery in a fully charged state.

The Battery charger will probably have to be operated continuously and will supply a charge rate of about one half (1/2) ampere. The Engine heaters and Battery heater will be required for only very cold temperatures, although continuous operation of the Engine water heaters when the temperature is below sixty (60) degrees F. is desirable.

The following operations should be performed by the Operator on his Weekly Inspection of the Siren.

1. Move Local Station Selector switch from REMOTE position to MANUAL position.

2. Disengage Clutch by pulling lever to full rear position (toward compressor).

3. Check quantity of gasoline in fuel tank (gasoline tank should be kept full at all times).

4. Check water level in Radiator, do not fill above one inch below lower end of filter neck (in cold weather test anti-freeze solution).

5. Check Oil in crankcase. Be sure it is up to full mark on oil level indicator.

6. Check Battery (visual). Make certain Battery top and terminals are free of dirt and corrosion.

7. Test specific gravity of the Battery electrolyte with a hydrometer having a temperature correction scale, cells should read even within ten (.010) points and have a specific gravity reading of twelve-fifty (1.250) or above after temperature correction. After specific gravity test is made, add pure water if necessary, so that plates are covered about three-eights (3/8) inches.

8. Remove any loose material near Compressor that may be picked up by inrush of air, to avoid any possible damage to Compressor unit.

9. Inspect Air Horns for any obstructions.

10. Inspect Fan, Generator, Governor and Power Take-Off belts for tightness, and adjust if necessary, so there is one-half (1/2) inch of slack when pressure is applied between pulleys.

11. Inspect Reduction gear to Turntable drive chain for tightness, adjust if necessary by moving Reduction gear housing and hold down bolts in the slotted holes, in the frame.

NOTE

The Starter switch on Instrument panel is inoperative on Sirens having Remote Control Circuit. Engine is started by Ignition switch. Start Engine and run it at Idling speed, not to exceed 1000 R.P.M. until normal operating temperature of approximately 160 degrees F. is reached as indicated by the temperature gauge located in the Instrument group.

12. Move Ignition switch on Instrument panel to "ON" position.

13. Adjust Throttle control button on Instrument panel until engine speed reaches 1000 R.P.M. as shown by Tachometer in Instrument group.

CAUTION: Do not run engine in excess of 1000 R.P.M.

14. Run Engine until normal operating temperature of about 160 degrees F. is reached as shown by temperature gauge in Instrument group.

15. Close Throttle control button on Instrument panel to return Engine to Idle.

16. Move Ignition switch to "OFF" position.

17. Engage clutch by pushing lever to full forward position (toward engine).

18. Move Local Station Selector switch from MANUAL position to REMOTE position.

CAUTION: The clutch must be engaged to give "Warning" Signal. After inspection, always make sure Clutch is returned to engaged position.

    PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

1. EAR PLUGS MUST BE USED FOR PROTECTION BY THE OPERATOR OR OTHER PERSONS NEAR THE SIREN IF THE SIGNAL IS BEING GIVEN AT LOCAL STATION.

2. UNDER NO CONDITIONS SHOULD THE OPERATOR OR ANY OBSERVERS COME IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE BLAST FROM THE SIREN HORNS WHILE THE SIGNAL IS BEING GIVEN.
