ENGINE POWER UNIT
The Chrysler eight cylinder industrial engine has
full pressure lubrication to all crankshaft, camshaft and connecting rod
bearings. Oil capacity is six quarts. Level indicator is on the left
side of the crankcase.
It is important to use proper viscosity oil. For
summer use SAE 30. For winter temperatures ranging from 45° F. to 10° F.
use 20W. For winter temperatures ranging from 10° F. above zero to 10°
F. below zero use No. 10W. For more severe winter conditions, dilute No.
10W with one (1) pint of kerosene in six (6) quarts of lubricant. The
oil pressure is from 30 to 45 lbs. at 1500 R.
P. M.
The need for changing engine oil depends to a large
degree upon local conditions. A comparison of the oil in the engine with
fresh oil will generally serve as a guide. Lack of body and the presence
of grit is an indication that fresh oil is needed.
Oil should be drained when the engine is hot. Refill with six USS
quarts of good oil.
BLOWER UNIT
The blower and chopper are mounted on a shaft which
is suspended by a bearing on each end of the siren unit. At the horn
end, the bearing is lubricated through the upper lubricating connection
on the right hand side of the housing. The lower connection is to be
used for draining the bearing. Refer to Fig. 4.
At the power end of the blower, the lubricant fitting
is on the bearing cap. (Remove seat and guard assembly to lubricate.)
After six months of operation, drain the oil from the
bearing on the horn end and wash out, using carbon tetrachloride. Refill
with 3 ounces of medium roller bearing lubricant, U. S. Army
specification No. 2-108, or equivalent.
DISTRIBUTOR
Fill the one oil cup with light engine oil. Add 2 or 3
drops of light engine oil to wick beneath rotor. Caution-See that no
lubricant or oil is on or near the breaker points.
CARBURETOR AIR CLEANER
Remove, thoroughly clean and re-oil air cleaner, at
least twice a year.
OIL FILTER PIPE CAP AIR CLEANER
Remove, clean and re-oil air cleaner, at least twice a
year.
GENERATOR AND STARTER MOTOR
Lubricate bearings, use only a few drops of light engine
oil in each cup.
SIREN UNIT BASE
The base of the siren unit serves as a turntable and
is geared to a reduction drive gear unit direct with power unit. There
are two lubrication fittings that require a small amount of lubricant
after six months of operation. Fig. 5.
The lower fitting on the base lubricates the ball
bearings which operate in connection with the oilite rings.
The upper fitting lubricates the shaft which revolves
in the base housing. (Use medium roller bearing lubricant, U. S. Army
specification No. 2-108, or equivalent.)
SIREN REDUCTION DRIVE GEAR UNIT
This unit is mounted on a carrier support bracket at
the front of the frame. There are two points to lubricate in
the gear box assembly. The front compartment requires 1 pint of
lubricant while the rear compartment requires 2 pints of lubricant.
(Each compartment is to be lubricated separately.) Drain, flush and
refill unit twice a year. For winter operation use 20W oil, for summer
operation use SAE 30 oil. Lubricate reduction gear shaft front bearing
with one ounce of medium roller bearing lubricant, U. S. Army
specification No. 2-108, or equivalent.
TRANSMISSION
The transmission is of a step-up constant mesh
design. The oil capacity is 1'/s pints. Drain, flush and refill the unit
twice a year. For winter operation use 20W, for summer operation use SAE
30.
WATER PUMP
Lubricate the engine water pump with water pump
lubricant only. (One fitting only.)
UNIVERSAL JOINT
The universal joint is of the needle bearing type.
Once a year, disassemble, wash bearings, and repack with fresh universal
joint lubricant.
