New Air Raid Siren Test Set in Harbor Tomorrow
Civil Defense Director Arthur W. Wallander of New
York issued the following communiqué yesterday:
"A super air raid warning siren is to be tested in
New York Harbor between 11 and 11:80 A. M, on Thursday, Sept. 11.
Residents of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan and New Jersey are asked
to make note of the time and the date in order to avoid the
misconception that an air raid is imminent."
The siren, driven by a 180-horsepower automobile
engine, will operate on a 180-degree swivel. The first blasts are to be
sounded near Bedloes Island and a second series off the southern tip of
Governors Island. Engineers with decibel meters will record the
intensity of the siren at various points downtown.
