Toll Road exceeds state standards

July 4, 2008

LETTER: Matt Pierce, Journal Gazette

The recent media coverage coverage of the handling of complaints about the Indiana Toll Road was built on inaccuracies and exaggeration. Claim: State agencies are being “flooded” with complaints.

Fact: The Indiana Toll Road has been host to more than 100 million drivers since the signing of the lease in June 2006. The letters of complaint have totaled around 300, and not all of these are complaints – some are simply inquiries. Without underplaying any of the actual complaints, it is clear that a small fraction of our 100 million patrons have felt it necessary to make a complaint.

Fact: A majority of the complaint letters focused on construction delays from major improvements to the Toll Road in spring and summer 2007 – during the process of installing our electronic toll collection system. We try to help drivers by implementing patron-friendly construction hours. This means no mainline lane closures during daytime hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day to help ease the influx of heavy summer traffic.

Fact: ITR Concession Co. maintains the Toll Road at or above the standards set by the state in our lease agreement. As a result of the more than $300 million invested, we have more lanes open today and are moving patrons faster and more efficiently than before the lease of the Toll Road.
