Colorado County Fair

Thursday was the start of the 24th Annual Colorado County Fair.  In the weeks leading up to the fair there's competition for Fair Queen.  There's also junior competition and here's a photograph of Most Beautiful Little Miss and Little Mister telling stories before the opening ceremony.  (09.12.02)

Looks like Junior Mister's big sister isn't impressed.  (09.12.02)

It's Friday night.  Welcome to the Columbus Lion's Club hamburger booth.  This is where David will spend eight hours of his weekend serving hamburgers to fair goers.  (09.13.02)

Saturday morning and here's the crowd waiting for the parade to pass the courthouse square in Columbus.  This is where the reviewing stand is located for judging floats.  The local radio station also does a live broadcast from the square where they describe every entry and any participating personalities.  (09.14.02)

David and the City's elected officials ride in the parade on a 1938 Ford fire truck.  For the last twenty-four years the Colorado County Fair has been held in the City of Columbus.  (09.14.02)

The parade route through Columbus is more than a mile-long.  Probably a 1,000 or more spectators have lined the streets to cheer the parade that will last better than an hour.  Being in the parade means that you see very little of it.    (09.14.02)

Back at the station.  The '38 Ford is backed into the fire station across the street from City Hall after returning from dropping the Mayor and another Councilmember off at the start area where they got on yet another float to ride in the parade.  Even now, while the fire truck is being put away, there are floats that haven't even started their run in the parade.  (09.14.02)

Several of the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department's half-dozen fire trucks were used in the day's parade.  This vintage Mack engine is almost exactly like the open cab Mack engines that David would sit in while his grandfather Alvin John Stall started and serviced them at the Veteran's Hospital in Long Beach, California during the mid 1960's when he ran the hospital's Motor Pool.  (09.14.02)

It was nearly 2am Sunday morning before David could get away to look at more antique tractors.  Here's a 1936 John Deere General Purpose Model 'B'.  (09.15.02)
