Emily DelBello Knape Award

Pat Abney, bilingual teacher at Alvin Elementary, is the recipient of the 2002 Emily DelBello Knape Excellence in Education Award.

The Excellence in Education Award is given to an educator who exemplifies the qualities that Knape demonstrated. Abney received a crystal plaque and a $1,000 cash award. Receiving special certificates were Samantha Pulse who was honorable mention, second runner up Doris McGuire and first runner up Brenda Causey. In addition, the Knape family gave Shirley Barbee, secretary at Alvin Elementary a special plaque and $500 for her service to the Emily Knape Award Committee from 1995 to the present.

Samantha is David's eldest daughter.

The award is given annually in memory of Emily Knape by her family Knape taught for nearly 40 years, 20 of them at Alvin Elementary. She passed away in the spring of 1995 before she got a chance to retire. Abney is also the Alvin Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2002.
