First In Space

David designed and built a museum space in one of the meeting rooms of Nassau Bay City Hall.  This was an early sketch of the walls and display areas.  This museum exhibit was conceived, designed, built, mounted and opened in six weeks.  (03.13.97)

The "First In Space: The Star City Cosmonauts' Collection" was originally offered as a small exhibit of a few space related pieces to be shown during the 1997 Russian Festival in Nassau Bay.  (04.11.97)

In just a matter of weeks, what had started as a few space related pieces to be shown during the 1997 Russian Festival turned into more than 200 artifacts from one of the most unique museums in the world.  David named the exhibit, "First In Space: The Star City Cosmonauts' Collection."  Visitors literally came from around the world to see this fantastic exhibit.  (04.11.97)

After the museum opening's ribbon cutting ceremony David and Star City Museum Director Ivan Kolotov autographed pieces of the ribbon for dignitaries in attendance.  (04.11.97)

Program of the official museum exhibit reception held at Nassau Bay City Hall on May 24, 1997.  The function was well attended by American astronauts, Russian cosmonauts, and many dignitaries from the space community.  (05.24.97)

At the Museum Reception on May 24, 1997, on behalf of cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov, Museum Director Ivan Kolotov presented David with an EVA glove used by Leonov in training for the first spacewalk from Voskhod 2 in 1965.  The glove was presented to David in recognition of his efforts to produce the first exhibition of the Star City Museum outside Russia.  (05.24.97)

Leonov and four other soviet cosmonauts, G. Titov, V. Shatalov, K. Feoktistov, and V. Polyakov, autographed the glove on May 15, 1997. The glove was also autographed by V. Gagarina, the widow of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space.  An inscription on the glove acknowledges it as a gift given with "pleasure and respect to David Stall."  (05.24.97)

David poses with the EVA glove used by cosmonaut Aleksei  Leonov in training for the first spacewalk from Voskhod 2 in 1965.  A program playing on the video wall across from this display showed film footage of Leonov practicing exit and entry from a mock-up Voskhod hatch installed in a plane used to simulate weightlessness.  (05.1997)
