Lt. Colonel Edward H. White, II
1930 - 1967

Astronaut Edward H. White believed that one should develop a sound mind and body through wholesome, vigorous and creative activities. It was his dream to create a place with just such an atmosphere, especially for children. As a community leader he began the effort to build a youth facility with a safe, secure and enriching environment. The first money donated to the project came from Ed White himself.

Following the tragic death of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffe in the 1967 Apollo 1 fire the community rallied to raise funds to build Ed White's youth center. Joining the effort humanitarian and entertainer Bob Hope hosted an "Extra Special" event in the Astrodome.

That effort helped make Ed White's dream come true and in September 1971 the Ed White Memorial Youth Center was officially dedicated. Today the Ed White Memorial Youth Center is a Texas non-profit charitable organization.

For many years the Ed White Memorial Youth Center provided full-day childcare for infants through school-age (0-14) throughout the Seabrook, Kemah and League City areas. Services  included before and after school care, deliveries and pickups to eight elementary schools as well as one intermediate school campus. Full-day care was also available for school holidays and teacher in-service days.

During the summer we offered a full summer day camp program.

Scholarships and reduced rates were provided for those who qualified.

During 2007 the facility leased and occupied by the Ed White Memorial Youth Center since 1971 was placed under contract for sale. Efforts to find a suitable nearby location have been unsuccessful.

On October 11, 2007, the Ed White Memorial Youth Center ceased operation of the childcare center.
